Richard A. D'Aveni is the Bakala Professor of Strategy at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. He is one of the foremost experts in the world on competitive strategy at multiple levels of competition: individuals, teams, corporations, militaries, governments, spheres of influence/alliances, and even competition between capitalist systems.

The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth is the graduate business school of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, in the United States. Tuck is one of six Ivy league business schools. Founded in 1900, Tuck was the first institution to offer a master's degree in the field of business administration.[4]

Tuck is known for its tight-knit community, loyal alumni and residential character and the school places a great deal of emphasis on these attributes. Tuck touts its distinct experience, ability to provide deep personal development and opportunities to build bonds with classmates and faculty. Tuck students, known as Tuckies, number around 560, the smallest student population among elite business schools. Tuck has a full-time faculty of 51, all of whom teach in the MBA Program.[5] Tuck has over 9,600 living alumni in a variety of fields, and the school claims to have the most supportive alumni network, with the highest rate of alumni donation of any business school, at greater than 70%.

He is the author of numerous articles in academic journals, Harvard Business Review, The Financial Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the MIT Sloan Management Review, as well as the best selling[citation needed] book Hyper-competition, which is available in 11 languages. He released Beating the Commodity Trap: How to Maximize Your Competitive Position and Increase Your Pricing Power in early 2010. He also wrote Strategic Supremacy, currently available in 4 languages. His writings are credited[citation needed] with creating a new paradigm in the field of strategic management based on temporary advantages employing principles of rapid and aggressive maneuvering and innovation rather than on defensive barriers to entry and power over buyers and suppliers.

His most recent book, "Strategic Capitalism: The New Economic Strategy for Winning the Capitalist Cold War", was published in September 2012. This book discusses the differences in American and Chinese forms of capitalism, how the Chinese system has flipped many American advantages into disadvantages, and how America might respond. The book has gathered a lot of attention in the press, including attention in the Washington Post, Fortune, Forbes,BloombergBusinessweek, and the Atlantic. It has prompted discussions at the top levels of the US Departments of Defense, State and Treasury.

Professor D’Aveni was named to the Thinkers 50 by The Times (of London), CNN, Forbes, The Times of India, and Harvard Business Review, a ranking of the 50 most influential living management thinkers in the world.[citation needed] He was ranked #21 overall, and among the top ten strategic thinkers listed.[citation needed] He is winner of the prestigious A. T. Kearney Award for his research on why, and how, large firms fail[citation needed], and he has been a World Economic Forum Fellow attending the annual meetings in Davos, Switzerland.[citation needed] WirtschaftsWoche, Germany’s Business Week, named Professor D’Aveni as one of America’s strategy professors most likely to influence the future of strategic thinking. And The Corporate Strategy Board in Washington, D.C. named him one of the seven most influential living strategic thinkers. D'Aveni has appeared on Yahoo! Tech Ticker, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, The Street.com, Fox Business News, and numerous other business-oriented programs and channels to discuss his books.

D'Aveni is a top keynote speaker at CEO forums, corporate off-sites, board meetings, conventions, economic forums, and numerous other venues around the world. He has been a strategic advisor to presidents (of G-7 countries), some of the wealthiest families in the world, Global 500 CEOs, and ruling royal families.
